Market Diseases of Apples, Pears, and Quinces
Russet Ring
Russet ring is a virus disease that occurs on Golden Delicious and Yellow Newtown apples in the Pacific Northwest. Symptoms consist of rings of russeted tissues surrounding relatively russet-free areas on the skin of the fruits (see photo). Russet ring is a superficial blemish that detracts from the appearance of the fruits, but does not affect dessert quality. Fruits showing symptoms of this disease may reach the market in lower-grade packs. The development of disease symptoms on the fruits is favored by cool growing seasons. Since it is a virus disease, it can be controlled only by the use of virus-free nursery stock.

Consult the State extension service or experiment station for information on control.
