Leafhopper Specking

Several species of leafhoppers infest apple trees, where they feed on the leaves. Fruits from infested trees exhibit numerous superficial brown or black specks about the size of a pinhead or smaller. They are usually most numerous on fruits that were exposed to dust when the leafhoppers were most active. These specks can be removed by washing, and the widespread use of brushing equipment for washing and polishing fruits has virtually eliminated leafhopper specking in the market.
